The Humber Junior Squash Academy entered an Under 11 team in the Northern Cup Championships at Alderley Edge Squash Club, Manchester on the 6 May finishing a creditable 8th place.
The team included Zac Toes (Beverley), Lydia Robinson, Jacob Earles & Tom Brown (Hull & ER) along with Callum Brankling (Total Fitness) who all represented their county for the first time.
In their first group games they played eventual runners up Nortumbria A with all players up against higher ranked opposition including Max Forster (England No 6).
Their second game saw Tom Brown being edged out 3/2 after some determined play, Lydia Robinson losing a close 3/1 and Zac Toes showing some skilful squash against the England no 43. Callum Brankling gave the Humber their first win of the competition with a mature performance including some well placed drives and nice touches against the England no 47.
In match 3, Tom Brown gave the Humber the perfect start as he displayed an excellent performance against the Derbyshire no 4 to win in three. Jacob Earles moved up to 3, playing some scintillating volleys and drops before Zac Toes showed some steely determination to win in four with the last game ending 11/0 to give the Humber their first win in the County team squash. Callum who had moved up to no 1 in the team, could not manage to make it a clean sweep and found the going tough against a much older opponent.
In the final game Tom got off to a flying start against his Northumbria opponent but could not close out the game and lost in three. Lydia (England U11 Girls No 11) narrowly lost in five but showed some quality cross courts, however her toils from the previous day, having won the Girls U11 event in Halifax saw her narrowly lose to the boys England no 26 who was an experienced opponent.
Callum, once again playing at no 1 gave the best performance of his life, narrowly losing in 5 to the England no 19. Callum showed some great sportsmanship and determination in a close encounter and gave his opponent a huge scare as he worked him to all four corners of the court with great control.
The final match saw a fantastic display by Zac who came back from two games and 6 match points down to beat the England no 25 in five games of gruelling squash. Zac fought for every point and moved his opponent around the court with attacking drives and a superb short game.
All players were a credit to their county and will look forward to taking on some of the best players in England at the Allam Humber Bronze event in June.
